Martha Jurado and Erika Erdely from UNAM presented papers at ELE UK 2018

Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world. Because of this, there is a great demand for its teaching. In the United Kingdom there are several universities and language academies that teach Spanish as a foreign language. One of the main organisations that gathers the professionals of Spanish is ELE UK, UK Association for the Teaching of Spanish in Higher and Adult Education).

As part of its regular activities, the members of ELE UK organise an annual conference. From 14 to 15 June 2018, King’s College London hosted the conference that had research and practise of ELE as the main theme. In this event, Dr Martha Jurado gave the opening keynote lecture. The lecturer of the Centro de Enseñanza para Extranjeros, spoke about the Mexican variety of Spanish and the challenges it faces with globalisation. In addition, Erica Erdely, also a lecturer at CEPE, presented her paper on the impact of cognitive grammar in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. Finally, UNAM UK, Centre for Mexican Studies, played an important role as sponsor of the conference. During both days of the conference, UNAM UK had a stand were the team promoted the SIELE exam, the Dicho y Hecho book series, as well as the activities developed by the Centre for Mexican Studies.

UNAM’s participation in ELE UK was of great importance. UNAM UK disseminated the work that the University undertakes to promote Spanish, while it also spoke about the UNAM’s broader impacts.
